“Trust in Allah — and then strive.” (Qur’an 3:159)
Surrender is not giving up — it is walking with a lighter heart.
In Islam, life is seen as a journey each person must walk with their own feet.
No one can run in our place.
But we are not asked to run alone.
One of the most essential teachings of the Qur’an is the harmony between effort and surrender:
“Trust in Allah — and then strive.”
Surrender is not abandonment.
Effort is not strain.
They belong together — like the inbreath and the outbreath.
1. Effort — the part that belongs to humans
Islam teaches that humans must:
do their best
act with honesty
keep their hearts upright
avoid laziness
avoid resignation
avoid escaping responsibility
Effort is the human portion —
the part Allah gives us so we may grow.
2. Surrender — the part that belongs to Allah
But after doing all we can, we are invited to:
release what is beyond our reach
stop trying to control fate
stop letting fear rule us
stop letting outcomes imprison the heart
Surrender is not giving up.
Surrender is placing the rest in Allah’s hands —
the One who knows what is best for us.
3. The sacred balance
Effort without surrender → exhaustion.
Surrender without effort → passivity.
Only when the two become one
can we walk lightly.
This is the spirit of Islam:
Humans do their part.
Allah does His.
4. Allah — “Closer to you than your jugular vein” (Qur’an 50:16)
Allah is not distant.
Not cold.
Not waiting at the end of the road to judge.
He walks with us
in every small step.
And that companionship
turns running into a journey with support.
5. Islam in the world
