The Four Foundations of Mindfulness are the fundamental practice of Buddhism, the direct path to awakening: contemplation of the body, feelings, mind, and phenomena. But in reality, many people — including myself — easily turn the Four Foundations into a technique, a method, even a framework to try to achieve something.
And then Jiddu appears like a bell of awakening. He says:
“Observe without choice, without judgment, without expectation.”
Isn’t that exactly the spirit of the Four Foundations?
Jiddu does not use the word “mindfulness,” but he invites us to look at the body, at emotions, at the mind… directly, without intermediaries, without any system. That simplicity helps me return to the Four Foundations with a lighter attitude: no effort, no forcing, just seeing.
In this series, I want to place Jiddu’s teachings next to the Four Foundations to see how they illuminate each other. Not to compare, but to clarify their shared spirit:
returning to observe oneself, in every moment, with clarity and freedom.
