That noon, the sun was harsh.
The young man was on the roof of the hermitage, adjusting a few tiles that had shifted.
The tiles were hot, and the smell of baked clay rose like the breath of summer.
He was placing the last tile carefully when—
crack!
A large branch suddenly snapped and fell beside the hermitage.
The sudden sound made his heart jump.
A wave of fear shot up his spine.
His hands gripped the roof tiles tightly.
But something strange happened:
When he looked closely at the fear that had just arisen,
he couldn’t find anyone who was afraid.
There was only a reaction.
A movement.
A wave.
No person behind it.
The teacher was sweeping the yard under the bodhi tree.
He looked up, shielding his eyes from the sun.
“Are you alright?”
The young man shook his head.
“I’m fine. I was startled… but what surprised me is that when I looked for the ‘one who is afraid,’ I couldn’t find anyone.”
The teacher put the broom down and looked at him for a long moment.
“Good.
You’ve just touched one of the most important insights:
the one who fears is an illusion.”
1. Fear exists only when there is a ‘fearer’
The teacher said:
“Jiddu Krishnamurti pointed this out:
fear cannot exist without the ‘one who fears.’
But when you look carefully,
you never find that person.
You only find:
· memories
· biological reactions
· selfimages
· old stories
· imagined futures
All of these combine
to create a shadow you call ‘me.’
And that shadow is the ‘fearer.’”
The young man looked at his hands—still slightly trembling, butno longer heavy.
2. Avatamsaka: No independent selfentity
The teacher continued:
“The Avatamsaka teaching says nothing has inherent nature.
There is no fixed entity called ‘self.’
If there is no entity,
then who is afraid?
There is only:
· sensation
· reaction
· memory
· the stream of consciousness
arising through dependent origination.
There is no ‘fearer.’
There is only fear happening.”
A lightness spread through the young man—
as if he had just stepped out of a dark room.
3. When the fearer disappears, fear dissolves
The teacher said:
“You don’t need to fight fear.
You don’t need to overcome fear.
You don’t need to battle fear.
You only need to look directly at the ‘one who fears.’
And when you cannot find anyone,
fear dissolves.
Because fear cannot exist
without the fearer.”
The young man nodded:
“Yes… it’s fading.
Not because I’m stronger,
but because there is no one left to be threatened.”
4. Freedom comes from seeing the fearer is an illusion
The teacher said:
“When you see the fearer is an illusion:
· the past no longer haunts you
· the future no longer threatens you
· the selfimage no longer traps you
· there is no ‘I’ to defend
You become light as wind—
because there is no one left to fear.”
5. Practice: look for the one who fears
The teacher looked up at the roof.
“Come down. Rest a bit.”
When the young man climbed down, the teacher said:
“From today, whenever fear appears,
don’t look at the fear.
Look at the one who fears.
And you will see:
there is no one there.”
The young man stood under the shade of the tree, looking at his hands—now completely calm.
The falling branch had startled him.
But that very jolt had opened a doorway:
Fear is real.
But the one who fears is not.
