That afternoon, on his way back to the hermitage after running errands in the village,
the young man met a hunter on the last slope before the hermitage came into view.

The hunter looked him up and down, then laughed loudly:

“So you’re the one from the hermitage.
I heard people up there meditate and become brave and unshakable, right?”

The young man simply smiled, saying nothing.

The hunter slapped his shoulder:

“If you’re that brave, come with me into the deep forest.
A white deer appears at dusk.
But the path is dangerous.
Only the fearless dare to go.”

The young man looked into the hunter’s eyes.

In them he saw challenge, ego, the need to prove something.

He sensed clearly:

This wasn’t an invitation—
it was a trap of the ego.

He replied gently:

“I’m not going.
Not because I’m afraid.
But because I have nothing to prove.”

The hunter laughed:

“Just say you don’t dare! Stop circling around.”

The young man remained calm:

“I don’t dare follow recklessness.
But I’m not afraid of the forest.”

The hunter frowned, confused.

The young man bowed and continued walking.

When he reached the top of the slope,
the teacher appeared—
as if he had been standing there long enough to hear everything.

“What did you see?”

The young man replied:

“I saw clearly the difference between fearlessness and recklessness.
The hunter wanted me to go to prove something.
But fearlessness is not proving.
It is clarity.”

The teacher smiled.

“Good.
Today you learned the lesson of fearlessness.”

 

1. Recklessness is the ego’s reaction

The teacher said:

“Recklessness is not the absence of fear.

Recklessness is the ego trying to prove something:

· I’m brave
· I’m strong
· I’m not afraid
· I’m better than others

Recklessness is action driven by the ego.
It is tense.
It is loud.
It wants to be seen.”

The young man nodded.
He had seen that clearly in the hunter’s eyes.

 

2. Fearlessness is the absence of the ego

The teacher continued:

“Fearlessness is not ‘not being afraid.’

Fearlessness is no one there to be afraid.

When the ego is absent:

· nothing to protect
· nothing to prove
· nothing to display

Fearlessness is clarity,
not challenge.”

The young man felt it clearly:

Fearlessness is light as wind.
Recklessness is heavy as stone.

 

3. Jiddu Krishnamurti: ‘Courage is not the absence of fear, but the absence of self.’

The teacher said:

“Jiddu Krishnamurti once said:

‘Courage is not the absence of fear,
but the absence of self.’

When the self disappears,
fear has nowhere to cling.

But when the self swells,
it uses recklessness to hide fear.”

The young man remembered the hunter’s eyes—
the eyes of a self trying to assert itself.

 

4. Avatamsaka: Seeing the whole → no foolish action

The teacher said:

“When you see the interbeing of all things,
you cannot do anything harmful to yourself or others.

The reckless person sees only the small self.
The fearless person sees the whole.

When you see the whole,
you act with wisdom,
not instinct.”

The young man exhaled—
as if a layer of fog had lifted from his mind.

 

5. Practice: ask ‘What is the motive of this action?’

The teacher said:

“From today, before every action, ask:

‘Does this action come from clarity or from ego?’

If it comes from ego → it is recklessness.
If it comes from clarity → it is fearlessness.”

The young man looked down at the dirt path.
The evening sunlight stretched across it like a golden carpet.

He understood:

Fearlessness is not walking into the deep forest—
but walking into oneself
without carrying the ego.
