He walked alone on a small path, between forest and water. Not seeking. Not observing. Not trying to write poetry.
Just walking.
A “plop” sounded — a frog jumping into the pond.
Very small. Very ordinary. Very unremarkable.
But in that moment, he saw the stillness beneath the sound. The infinite beneath the tiny. Life deep without needing to be large.
He wrote: “Old pond. A frog jumps in. Sound of water.”
Not poetry. Not philosophy. Not enlightenment.
Just a moment when the mind did not intrude upon the world.
And in that nonintrusion, the way in opened — light as a ripple, as a pause between two sounds.
Not through thinking. But through hearing.
